In response to requests from mental health professionals and advocates west of the DFW area, Mental Health America of Greater Dallas announces a one-day version of its renowned Adolescent Symposium of Texas — now in its 48th year—the first Adolescent Symposium on the Road!
Adolescent Symposium on the Road will be held on Thursday, November 9, 2023, at the beautiful Pat May Center, Hurst-Euless-Bedford ISD’s Professional Development Center in Bedford, Texas! It is open to everyone with per person pricing including CEUs (Continuing Education Units): Registration $100, or at the door $110. On The Road features six talented speakers’ workshops that provide the tools that professionals and advocates alike need to support the youth they work with daily and help prevent crises.

Jose Caballero, National Mental Health Advocate
The Youth Will Save Us: Expanding Youth Engagement and Accessibility
Jose, a National Mental Health Advocate who experienced living in Nicaragua as a queer individual and then language and socioeconomic barriers following a move to Miami will share the importance of incorporating and amplifying young individuals' efforts, lived experiences, and voices.
He will present:
- The influence of intergenerational trauma and the generational gap of today’s youth
- How he channels his lived experiences and identities into advocacy for intersectional mental health
- Tangible steps and valuable resources to expand youth involvement within organizations
Ana Marcela Rodriguez, LMFT, Therapy Works Counseling
Transgenerational and Intergenerational Trauma in the the Hispanic Community
Ana's presentation will focus on understanding the mechanisms of trauma transmission, the impact of trauma on individuals, families, and communities, and therapeutic interventions that can help clients overcome the effects of this trauma in an effort to work towards healing and building resilience in the Hispanic community.

Trendy To Be Depressed: The Hidden Reasons Teens Aren’t Getting Better and How To Help
This workshop reviews the hidden rewards or benefits a teen may get from being mentally unwell. Audiences will learn how social media perpetuates hidden rewards, making mental health issues like ADHD and depression “trendy." They will also learn how to identify hidden rewards and how to help teens avoid them.
The audience will:
- Be able to define and identify hidden agendas, which are the subconscious reasons people hold onto mental suffering rather than getting better
- Understand how the increase of audiovisual-based, algorithmic social media platforms (like TikTok) have perpetuated teens’ hidden agendas
- Learn, and practice in session, interventions to help teens impacted by hidden agendas

The Effect of Smartphones on Youth Mental Health and Their Impact in Schools
This workshop will discuss the impact smartphones have had on our youth and their mental health – including ADHD, anxiety, and depression.
The audience will:
- Be able to explain how smartphones affect the attention, memory, and reward centers of the brain and increase symptoms of anxiety, depression, and ADHD.
- Learn how smartphones have impacted our relationships at home and at school.
- Learn how smartphones in schools – content exposure, the “attention competition,” and the negative impact smartphones can have in emergency situations. Will be able to express what we can do to earn back the attention of our youth.

Gender Affirming Care 101
This presentation will provide a detailed overview of the best practices and strategies when providing gender-affirming care to transgender or gender expansive clients. Attendees will be taught multiple specific strategies to use when working with this population of youth.

- Be able to recognize and understand a variety of transgender/gender-nonconforming specific terms.
- Learn and be competent in using various specific strategies when providing Gender-Affirming Care to adult and youth clients.
