SUMMARY:Parlays\, Bookies\, and Debt. Oh My! (COMI)
DESCRIPTION:Parlays\, Bookies\, and Debt. Oh My!\nSaul Malek is a 26-year-old Dallas-based speaker and Texas Coalition on Problem Gambling Board member. Saul developed a gambling addiction as a college sophomore\, losing money\, time\, relationships\, and nearly his life. Since finding recovery in 2019\, he has made it his mission to help others cope with life\, find purpose\, and keep away from maladaptive behavior such as compulsive gambling. Saul has used his experience to inspire and educate a generation inundated with invitations to gamble. \nIn this presentation\, Saul focuses on self-acceptance\, resilience\, positive decision-making\, and gambling harm prevention. He teaches how to detect secretive gambling behavior\, strategies to make campuses and organizations safer from gambling harm (ex: doing away with high school casino night\, clearly presenting the risks and possible consequences of participation in fantasy sports\, March Madness\, etc)\, and raise awareness and respect for the scope of gambling addiction\, recognizing consequences beyond financial loss. \n  \nJoin Zoom Meeting \nhttps://zoom.us/j/92316796976?pwd=ZVpwM3pPbjNqaEZ0NHFoMnNTc1NxUT09 \n  \nMeeting ID: 923 1679 6976 \nPasscode: 008458 \n \n	Speaker\nSaul Malek\, Professional Speaker\, Texas Coalition on Board Gambling Board Member

SUMMARY:Addiction – The Tipping Point (COMI)
DESCRIPTION:Addiction – The Tipping Point\nAddiction is skyrocketing along with other mental health problems in the post-pandemic world. Available resources to help are dwindling for a variety of reasons and the Peer movement is one of the ways the industry is seeking to combat these trends. \nThere’s a lack of understanding about how common addiction is and how prevalent addictive behaviors are\, not to mention full-blown disease. Understanding how difficult it can be to regain and maintain functional control of life after active addiction is pivotal in being effective at assisting people in recovery. This fundamental misunderstanding contributes to the stigmas that impede recovery in the world overall but also in the mental health community. \nA theme throughout the presentation will be to provide clarity and relatability to the addict\, their suffering\, and their unique challenges so as to enable us all to better provide help. \n \nSpeaker\nJulia Schneider\, Sober Coach\, Recovery Support Peer Specialist\, ARISE Interventionist Intern

SUMMARY:Culture and Society: Influencers of Mental Health (COMI)
DESCRIPTION:Culture and Society: Influencers of Mental Health\nMental Illness is not racist\, nor does it discriminate yet societal issues have directly contributed to mental illness in minority cultures. It’s becoming more and more evident within the landscape of mental health that culture and society are emerging as the primary influencers of acceptance\, access to care\, and attitudes toward help-seeking behaviors. \nMany treatment options are camouflaged within medicine and models not designed to generate positive outcomes in BIPOC communities. Without clearly defined guidance and leadership\, society as we know it will continue to descend into an abyss void of compassion. \nThis presentation will discuss: \n1. A Dose of Reality \n2. Barriers to Access \n3. Changing the Game \n \nSpeaker\nPatrick LeBlanc\, Executive Director/Founder of Bridging the Gap Foundation \n\nCertified Trauma and Resilience Professional\nMental Health First Aid Instructor\nCommunity Health Educator with Parkland
